Business Collecting For Fire Victims on HHI

Posted: Updated:
BLUFFTON, S.C. -

One local business is stepping up and collecting items for families displaced by a fire that destroyed an apartment building last week.

"You hear about a tragedy and think, what can I do to make a difference?"

Several families including friends of Chef Russell Keane lost almost everything in the fire at Windemere Apartments last week. So Keane, who owns two restaurants in the area, and other workers at NEO in Bluffton decided to do something about it.

"We figured we'd post up on Facebook to get some donations to help them out, you know. It's terrible for something like that to happen at Christmas time," said Keane.

And that holiday cheer is spreading, just from a facebook post. Bags and boxes of supplies have been donated.

"TVs, household items, toiletries, everything from toothbrushes to medical supplies. It's been a lot of different things, food, there's been some cash donations, gift certificates, and anything extra we get, we're giving to the Red Cross to benefit other families affected by it."

Russell says this tragedy is inspiring town residents to give whatever they can to help out their neighbors in need this holiday season.

"Hopefully we can get them back on their feet and get them everything they need. This community will take care of them."

If you'd like to help, please drop off clothes, food, or other supplies at NEO in the Moss Creek Plaza before the Hilton Head bridge.

Rough Weather Causes Tree To Collapse onto House

Our spate of nasty spring weather this weekend didn't just bring rain into the picture. In some parts of our immediate area wind was also a major part of the weather scene. A good example of this is the house in Liberty County that was walloped by a tree. Apparently the house, located in the 4700 block of East Ogelthrope Highway was damaged when a massive tree fell on it. Neighbors believe heavy winds caused the tree to topple onto the building. The good news here is no one was injured. But t...
