BREAKING NEWS: Cheley Sentenced to Life Plus 35 Years

SAVANNAH, GA -

UPDATE:  Shan Cheley sentenced to life in prison plus 35 years.  No possibility of parole.


BREAKING NEWS: Shan Cheley guilty on 5 of 7 counts including murder.  Not guilty on rape charge.  The jury deliberate over seven hours, and has convicted Cheley in the murder of 18-year-old Amber Deloach in Savannah last year.

The District Attorney's office has issued this release:

"The Office of Eastern Judicial Circuit/Chatham County District Attorney announces that on December 20, 2013, a Jury found Shan Demetrius Cheley (age 37) guilty of: malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, arson in the 1st degree and possession of cocaine. Although formal sentencing is scheduled for a later date in front of Chatham County Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley; Cheley is charged as a recidivist and mandatory sentencing requirements dictate that the sentence for these crimes be life in prison without parole."

Closing arguments have been underway in the Shan Cheley murder trial since about 10:30 this morning. Cheley is accused of the rape and murder of 18-year-old Amber DeLoach on September 30th of last year.

Once closing arguments have finished, jurors are expected to go to lunch before being charged by the judge in the case and beginning deliberations.
