ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -

Three people and a dog had to be rescued Wednesday after their 23-foot boat ran aground in the Alligator River near Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Tyrell County Sheriff's Office contacted the Coast Guard after getting a 911 distress call from boaters around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials were unable to approach the boaters by boat due to shallow waters. An MH-60 helicopter was sent out and airlifted the people and dog to safety.

None of the boaters or dog was injured.
