2 killed in Durham on day Police Chief Lopez gives report

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Two people were killed Monday morning on Cheek Road, the same day Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez was set to speak to give a quarterly report to the Durham City Council.

Officers were dispatched to a shooting call shortly before 7 a.m. in the 2200 block of Cheek Road. When officers arrived, they found a woman dead inside a home. The second victim, a man, was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not determined a motive at this time and no charges have been filed yet in the case.

"We're hopeful that someone who was driving by, it's a well-traveled road,on Cheek Road, may have seen something – maybe unusual or whatever to give us a call or to call CrimeStoppers," Lopez said.

When pressed about the double murder in light of the fact that he was about to give a report on the status of crime in Durham, Lopez said tersely:

"I understand where you're headed with it, to make it look like it's really bad out there, but at this point in time, we're dealing with this investigation.

"We're going to move on. We're hoping that people in the community who may have been driving by, because it's a heavily traveled road, are going to call the police with anything they may have seen. The little bits that they may have seen may help us."

Police cleared the scene around 5 p.m.

Dwight Gill, a neighbor who has lived in the area for about seven months, said, he heard "nine gunshots going off."

Marshall Holloway, a neighbor who lived next door to the house where the murders happened, said the neighborhood is "pretty quiet. It's very peaceful."

But, Gill said, "It doesn't make any difference where you're at. If something's going to go on, it's going to go on."

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator S. Pate at (919) 560-4440. ext. 29332 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
