SELMA, N.C. -

A 72-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a van in on Interstate 95 near Selma Wednesday night.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed Arnold Newsome Jr. was on the side of the northbound lanes of I-95 when he was hit by a van driven by Jesus Hernandez of Bailey.

Hernandez, 36, will not be charged in the incident, the Highway Patrol said. Investigators could not determine if Newsome was crossing the interstate or why he was there.

Hernandez had two passengers in his van at the time of the accident. No one in the van was injured, the Highway Patrol confirmed.

Newsome had been staying with his son in Selma for the previous 10 days, authorities said.

The Highway Patrol said the body has been sent to the medical examiner to determine if alcohol could have been a factor in the incident.
