Missing man's absence painful for family on Christmas holiday

POLLOCKSVILLE, N.C. -

Christmas is usually a happy holiday, but for one Craven County man, there was a note of sadness this year.

William Moore's son, William Moore, Jr., went missing more than two weeks ago in Jones County, and he worries about him every day.

Junior's absence this Christmas was painful. The 30-year-old was last seen December 8. The Jones County Sheriff's Office declared him missing Dec. 10 after he left the home in Pollocksville he shared with his mom.

"Yesterday, you know, it was Christmas. I thought about him most of the day. I had all my other family around me, or I could talk to them l but I couldn't call or couldn't see him. That really hurts," said William Moore, Sr. of James City.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert, and the Jones County Sheriff's Office launched an intense search with 160 people. But after four days of searching the woods and elsewhere, they called it off.

"I talked to the detective. He was telling me that they spent over $1 million searching and this and that," said Moore.

Jones County emergency management couldn't confirm the cost, but coordinator Carol Tyndall says she's disappointed she couldn't find him. She says every other person who went missing in Jones County in the last two decades was found alive.

"We've never had a search that we've had this many people involved in it, and so many organizations," said Tyndall.

Search teams found Moore's underwear in the woods, as well as his shoes, leading them to believe he was naked at a time when temps were dropping. The sheriff's office believes he also has a mental disability, something his dad would not confirm.

"I would love to be able to put my hands on him. Just to see him and know that he's OK," said Tyndall.

Moore was last seen walking north on U.S. 17 from Pollocksville. For dad, it's hard to go on.

"I'm real concerned because like I said, I named him. And I love him with all my heart. And I know he loves me," said Moore.

William Moore, Sr. isn't sure why his son left his home, but he wants him to come back.

If you have any information on William Moore, Jr.'s whereabouts, the Jones County Sheriff's Office wants you to call them at (252) 448-0035.

A Silver Alert has been issued for a missing Jones County man.

William Moore, 30, of Pollocksville, hasn't been seen for three days. Rescue teams say he may be at risk of hypothermia because he is naked. He's also believed to have a mental disability.

"He started undressing, I guess, somewhere close to his home, and then on 17, behind a residence house, was where his last articles of clothing was found, including his shoes," said Jones County Emergency Management Coordinator Carol Tyndall.

Tyndall says search teams have found several clues, including his underwear. She says it's possible Moore believed he was hot and started undressing.

"I don't know what type of condition he's in. I don't know if he's found shelter somewhere," said Cpt. Jim Bateman, Jones County Sheriff's Office.

About 25 people are searching the woods, roads, and overpasses in Jones County. They've brought cadaver dogs, bloodhounds, and a military helicopter.

"We've got search teams covering this entire area back toward Ten Mile Fork and Simmons [Loop] Road," said Bateman.

Tyndall says Moore hasn't been seen since Sunday, when he left the home he shared with his mother in Pollocksville. Moore was last seen on U.S. 17 walking north from Pollocksville toward New Bern.

His mom reported him missing on Tuesday.

"Everybody is still trying to have wishful thinking and that we can find him OK," said Bateman.

Moore's dad didn't want to talk on-camera, but he says he wants his son back.

"They're really worried over him. He's normally a gentle person. They say he'd give you the shirt off his back. He's just a good guy," said Tyndall.

Tyndall says search teams will go on as long as it takes, until they find him.

If you have any information about his whereabouts, you're asked to contact the Jones County Sheriff's Office at 252-448-0035.
