Board unanimously approves Muscogee superintendent's reading program

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Muscogee County School District Superintendent David Lewis's first major change since become chief officer this summer was unanimously approved by the Board of Education Monday night. A new $1.7 million reading program will look to standardize the way reading is taught in county schools.

The program is meant to ease the burden for students who transfer between schools, as it not only synchronizing learning within the district but also coincides with newly adopted Common Core standards. The program has a key digital component, which is meant to make the learning activities more in tune with students of the twenty first century.

"[We're] trying to get away from worksheets as we know them," Lewis said before the Board Monday.

The six year program, which will be paid for over the period of two years, could begin rolling out in January.
