Viral video: Oregon students pelt retired professor with snowballs

EUGENE, Ore. -

A retired professor at the University of Oregon will not press charges after he was bombarded with snowballs by students on Friday, according to a local report.

The Daily Emerald said Sherwin Simmons said, "I have confidence that the reaction of the university given what has happened will be proportional. It will consider these young people and their futures and will also, I hope, suggest to them that they need to rethink behavior like that."

The university has said it is investigating.

The incident gained national attention when video showed students pushing snow in front of the windshield of his car and then pelting him with snowballs when he got out of his car.

Simmons was on the way to a campus museum around 3 p.m. Friday when the incident happened. He happened to drive toward a snowball fight organized by players on the Oregon football team.

Oregon football coach Mark Helfrich said the players involved will face "disciplinary action," according to ESPN.com.

"The behavior exhibited in the video is completely unacceptable and dangerous. We take this matter very seriously and disciplinary actions have begun," Helfrich said in a statement.
