Cool School: Muscogee Elementary

Posted: Updated:

Muscogee Elementary is the cool school for the week of November 18th. Second grade teacher Dorothy Reviere is proud of her class and even more proud of her students. She says, "I enjoy teaching my children. They are young and they are really open for learning. Their very energetic and they keep me on my toes and new ways to teach them."

The day's lesson includes making thanksgiving day cards and doing an activity about General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. Her students enjoy learning the state's history and being students at Muscogee Elementary. Jakila Johnson says, "I love this class. We're still learning things and we're still doing okay so I love this class and its alright to me." Another student in her class, Maurice Stanley says, "My teacher is the nicest teacher in the whole world."

With more than 400 students...the school prides itself on being a diverse school in the community. Principal, Dr. Burl Levins, says that, "We just got our special recognition as being recognized as one of the high progressive schools by the state of Georgia so that is very exciting for our students as well as for the staff. It shows that we've made progress for consecutive of three years."

The school also teaches its students character building skills. One group that does that is the friendship group. School counselor Leslie Parks says, "The students learn how to make friends and be friends and their also learning how to make paper beads they can use to make a necklace or a bracelet."

The group of students is so close that they call each other sisters and cousins. They are also learning life lessons. Student Desiree Lane says, "The good way to make friends is to be nice and say thank you and you're welcome but if someone makes fun of you, just say I like it that way or that's okay or somebody making fun of somebody else just say don't do that, that's mean."

Muscogee Elementary is a cool school, if not for its students, for its determination to succeed. Dr. Burl Levins says, "We are a high performing school and that we are steady making progress and we want them to know that our children can compete and their ready to be global citizens of the world."
