'Grinch' cast donates items to Durham Rescue Mission

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

The Grinch is giving back this Christmas.

A cast member from "Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" musical donated a suitcase filled with toiletry items to the Durham Rescue Mission.

The cast collected items for women and children at the mission's Good Samaritan Inn.

"Especially like the Christmas season, it's good to know you're doing something for someone else and that's what I got out of it," said cast member Tara Tagliaferro.

The number of people turning to the shelter is up 35 percent compared to last year.

Each woman who checks in gets a gift bag filled with items such as what the Grinch cast donated.

"When I first came here, it was 10 at night. I didn't have any clothes or anything and they gave me this gift bag and it made me feel really special. Made me feel loved," said Sequoia Worthy, who arrived at the inn four months ago.

The Grinch cast is part of "Broadway Serves," an organization that encourages people in stage productions to serve in the community.

"The Grinch" is playing sold out shows in Durham through Sunday.

Thousands of motorists pass stopped school buses every day, and many of them may not even realize they are breaking the law. It's an issue that has received intense attention in North Carolina, with 13 children being hit, and killed, at bus stops since 1999. One survey on March 26 of this year recorded 429 times where a driver roared past a stopped school bus in Wake County alone. In Durham County, there were 89 violations that same day and Cumberland County had a whopping 210. Johnston Coun...
