Reclassification shuffles Georgia high school sports

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Several area schools have been re-classified into higher classifications for the 2014-16 school years.

Carver, Columbus, Shaw and Northside will join Harris County and LaGrange, along with Thomas County Central and Bainbridge, in Region 1-AAAAA beginning next year.

For Carver, Columbus, Shaw and LaGrange it will be a move up. Carver played most recently in AAA, while Shaw, Columbus and LaGrange were all AAAA.

The move is primarily to cut down on travel costs.

Schools can ask for a lateral transfer within the classification to a different region until Friday. Those appeals will be heard Dec. 17, and then the reclassification will be ratified on Jan. 14, 2014.
