Protecting and Serving Meets Facebook, Twitter, @BlufftonPolice

BLUFFTON, S.C. -

More cops are taking to the Internet, to reach out to those they serve and protect through Facebook and Twitter.

The Bluffton Police Department just launched its Facebook page www.facebook.com/blufftonpolice and Twitter account www.twitter.com/Bluffton Police (@BlufftonPolice).

Lt. Joe Babkiewiscz says it's because more people respond and communicate this way than ever before.

"This was a great way to reach out to our community members and provide them with certain information such as community policing projects, crime prevention techniques, as well as some information regarding some people we're looking for out there in the community," Babkiewiscz says.

For Bluffton neighbors like Anthony Gray, it's a much more practical way of communicating. It's how he gets the bulk of his news, too.

"You can see it on the news feed, and see what's going on in other people's lives, to keep an update on different things that's going on in the world," Gray says.

This fits perfectly with Bluffton Police's goal in social media networking.

"They can automatically get updates as we move along," Babkiewiscz says.

"The Facebook page is a great way to provide transparency to members of the community to see what their police is doing, to see how we're supporting the community in many different ways."

However, there are other purposes for this connection.

"Facebook and tweeting is actually used to solve a lot of crimes in agencies nationwide," he says.

Police will gladly accept any tips through Facebook, and on Twitter by using #blufftonpd.

They say their Facebook page is already gaining popularity, with at least 1,000 likes in just two weeks.
