Amazon premieres ‘Prime Air’ delivery service

Posted: Updated:

Amazon says they are developing a delivery method that will help them get packages to customers within 30 minutes.

The company revealed on Sunday they are developing unmanned aerial vehicles that will fly orders directly to consumers. Amazon posted a YouTube video of a ‘test flight’ and it has already garnered over a million views.

Amazon does caution it will take some time to get the new delivery service going saying, “Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations.”

Many tweets and Facebook post question the legitimacy of Amazon’s research, but the company list several frequently asked questions about the future service. One even addressing concerns that the project is science fiction saying, “It looks like science fiction, but it's real. From a technology point of view, we'll be ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles.”

In an interview on 60 minutes, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says the drones will be ready in four or five years.

The octo-copters Amazon would use can only carry packages that weigh up to five pounds, but Amazon says 90% of the packages it delivers weigh less than that.
