Black Friday shopping in Columbus

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Black Friday tradition was a little different this year with many different stores opening Thanksgiving day. The crowds starting around 4:30 a.m. this morning weren't very big at stores across the area.

Long lines wrapped around retail stores in anticipation of holiday deals is a staple for Black Friday-when most stores would open their doors around 6 a.m. the Friday after Thanksgiving. But this year in Columbus there were only a handful of cars at local stores early Friday morning.

"I think cause everybody opened so much earlier, so we never ran into any crowds," said Hannah Parrott.

Stores did open earlier this year, many opening around 6:00 a.m Thanksgiving evening and some as early as 5 a.m. Thanksgiving morning.

"I thought it was pretty neat cause then people could go and get what they ant and get done and if they want they can go to bed early and don't have to get up at 2 or 3 in the morning," said Beth Nachman.

Beth and her friend Alanna started their shopping trip around 5:00 p.m. Thanksgiving evening.

"We waited in Walmart for about 3 and a half to 4 hours to get 2 tvs, but the deal was awesome," said Nachman.

And continued to shop until the next morning when many of the crowds had died down.

"We're usually used to seeing hundreds of cars out here but it was pretty easy. Go in, go out, we're done," said Alanna Roverts.

But some Black Friday shoppers won't change their tradition.

"My personal opinion everybody should have a day off and be home so we don't go to stores on Thanksgiving. It was after midnight before we walked out the door," said Jean Rowe.
