Salvation Army Feeds Many for Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

At least 300 people are enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving meal today hosted by the Salvation Army. Major Phil Swyers tells us there seem to be even more people in need this year. "Especially with the recent cold snap, we're completely full in our shelter locations and it's just amazing how many people need help in our community," he told us.

For Elijah Walden and his little girl, the meal was a welcome relief to relax and talk with others. The two have been homeless for the past few months and staying at a shelter. "The is food is really good, I'm very thankful," he said. "It makes me happy to know there are people out there who care."

Swyers says he is always amazed that people who are struggling can be grateful. "You wonder how someone who's homeless can be so thankful. And it's always amazing the gratitude people have..

Swyers says the annual dinner could not have come off without the help of dozens of volunteers, including the organizations that helped cook the turkeys.

Wyndham Parker who came to eat told us "the volunteers could be doing something else and you appreciate them. You don't worry about what you don't have and what people don't give you. It's the time of year when you're thankful for what you're getting."
