Ft. Benning troops and families served Thanksgiving feast

FT. BENNING, Ga. -

Shyla Simao enjoyed an early thanksgiving meal with her husband, who serves as a staff sergeant in the 63rd Engineer Company.

"I don't have to cook today which is really good and we actually get to spend time together and have lunch together which we don't always get to do, so as a spouse I enjoy that," says Simao.

Staff Sergeant Simao and his family went through the chow line and picked from a wide spread of thanksgiving favorites. One of his battalion leaders, First Sergeant Charles Fuller, cut the turkey.

"The soldiers give their hard effort and work every single day and me as a leader, this is how I give back," says First Sergeant Charles Fuller of the 63rd Engineering Company.

Fort Benning's 14 dining facilities will serve about 11,000 Thanksgiving meals the next few days. Officers served soldiers and their families some thanksgiving favorites Tuesday at the Ranger Dining Facility. Officers say it was a way to show appreciation to their soldiers.

"Anytime you can take a break and bring in the family, they spend a lot of time in the recent past doing training so anything we can give back to the soldiers and their families, it's always a big morale booster," says David Park, the Battalion Executive Officer of the 11th Engineering Battalion.

Most soldiers and their families say, this Thanksgiving, they're thankful for the appreciation.

"For these guys to take the time out of their days, because they're extremely busy, to come in here and serve us, it's a real privilege for us," says Joshua Horsager of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Nearly 7,000 pounds of turkey will be served at Fort Benning this week.
