Savannah Officers, Citizens Awarded for Heroic Duty

SAVANNAH, GA -

Some of Savannah's finest were on full display Monday, honored for making a difference and saving lives.  

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department handed out two dozen award to officers and civilians who went the extra mile.

Each recipient credited with great police work to track down suspects, to protecting fellow officers, to saving lives on land, or even underwater.

Among the officers honored were three, who helped a fellow officer who had a medical incident while chasing down a suspect.

According to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police:

IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF JANUARY 3, 2013 - OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A BURGLARY AT CRITZ AUTO.  THE SUSPECTS TRIED TO HIDE IN THE WOOD LINE NEAR THE CRITZ PARKING LOT - ONE OF THE SUSPET BROKE COVER AND RAN.  
APO GARY KASPER RAN AFTER THE SUSPECT AND COLLAPSED-SUFFERING A CATASTROPHIC HEART ATTACK.  OFFICER NORMAN HARVEY SAW OFFICER KASPER THROUGH THE FENSE BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET TO HIM - HE PLACED AN OFFICER DOWN CALL.  
SGT. DAVID JAMES WAS THE FIRST TO RESPOND - HE FOUND OFFICER KASPER UNRESPONSIVE WITH NO PULSE AND HE WASN'T BREATHING.  SGT. JAMES BEGAN CPR AND APO JEFF COTTER ARRIVED AND BEGAN ASSISTING.
APO TUCKER ARRIVED AFTER ARRESTING ONE OF THE SUSPECTS AND ALSO ASSISTED WITH CPR.  EMS ARRIVED - PARAMEDICS PUT OFFICER KASPER IN THE AMBULANCE - OFFICER COTTER DROVE THE AMBULANCE WHILE  SGT. JAMES AND  OFFICER TUCKER CONTINUED WITH CPR.  THE PARAMEDICS WERE SETTING UP IV'S AND OPENING OFFICER KASPERS AIRWAY.
THE TIME THE OFFICER DOWN CALL WENT OUT TO THE TIME THE AMBULANCE LEFT THE PARKING LOT WAS LESS THAN SIX MINUTES.
DOCTORS INVOLVED IN OFFICER KASPER'S RECOVERY SAY THE PROMPT ACTION FROM OFFICERS GAVE THE TRAUMA TEAM THE BEST CHANCE TO SAVE KASPER AND ARE IN DISBELIEF THAT HE SURVIVED.  
Chief Tolbert- along with APO Kasper - will now present the LIFE SAVING MEDAL and service bar to Sgt. David James, APO Chris Tucker and APO Jeffrey Cotter in honor and recognition for extraordinary efforts which directly resulted in saving the life of fellow officer.


"I am so grateful to all these officers," said APO Gary Kasper, the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police officer who's life was saved. "If it was not for them I wouldn't be standing here, I owe them my life, literally."

"It wasn't just us," said Sgt David James, honored with the Life Saving Medal. "It was the great team effort, not just us but the EMS, the hospital and his will to live that we were able to be here today."

Joseph Toth, Dana Boram, Freddie Clifton, Candy Garman, Beverly Gilbert, and Kamini White, Mr. Michael Council, APO Brian Spence, Capt. John Best, Lt. Dan Flood, Sgt. Clarence Few, Ret. Sgt. Randall Powell, APO Lennie Reolegio, APO Scott Bill, Ptl. Daniel Manasco, APO Allison Reis, Ptl. Cameron Nichols, Ptl. Shaun Dobbs, APO Marie Anderson, APO Michele Schiro, Officer Hilary Nielsen, Det. Nathaniel Kirkland, Det. Mike Delatorre

Also honored, APO Detective Trina Mayes.

Mayes is the same officer who has accused former Chief Willie Lovett and the department of various charges including sexual harassment.
