Coast Guard rescues 2 teens from Currituck Sound

CURRITUCK, N.C. -

The Coast Guard rescued two teens Sunday morning after their Jon boat started taking on water in the Currituck Sound.

Currituck County 911 dispatchers called the Coast Guard around 8 a.m. to request a helicopter for a rescue after the teenage boys' 16-foot Jon boat became disabled and began taking on water in the Currituck Sound near navigation marker 99, according to  a news release from the Coast Guard.

Boat crews from the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Center and Currituck County responded to the area but could not approach the teens safely enough to rescue them.

A helicopter from Coast Guard station Elizabeth City responded to the area around 9 a.m. to find the teens had abandoned the boat and climbed the navigational marker.

The helicopter crew lowered a swimmer, who helped hoist the boys on to the aircraft, which took the teens to Albemarle Hospital to be evaluated by medics. There is no word on their condition.
