Greenville Fire & Rescue hosts annual chili cookoff

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Greenville city employees face off to see who makes the best chili in town and it's all for a great cause.

The annual chili cook-off at Greenville Fire and Rescue raises money for the United Way.

Several teams competed today. They had to impress a handful of taste testers, including Mayor Allen Thomas, District Attorney Kimberly Robb and Police Chief Hassan Aden.

9 On Your Side’s own Kristen Hunter joined the group as a guest judge.

“I’m a foodie,” Chief Aden says. “[I’m] judging it based on taste, texture and innovation."

Hunter had a more laid-back approach and joked, "I’m much nicer than the chief. I said I am the Paula Abdul of this competition and he is Simon Cowell!”

After the competition, more than 260 people from the community came out to enjoy a bowl.

First place went to Greenville Fire and Rescue Station 6 for its "Havana Heat" chili. Second place went to Billy Merrill from Greenville Public Works. Third place went to Greenville Fire and Rescue Station 5, Shift 2 dubbed the “Fighting Five.”

“People’s Choice” went to Greenville Fire and Rescue’s Joey Minner’s old-fashioned three bean chili. In the professional division, Courtside Café won first place, with Christy’s Euro Pub coming in second.
