Mayor Tomlinson: Columbus burglary spree slowing

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Members of The Neighborhood Watch Group on Facebook were surprised to see Mayor Tomlinson address their complaints of recent home burglaries.

She wanted folks to know the crime spree that has gripped Columbus and put many residents on edge, is slowing down.

"We do think we've definitely put a dent in that criminal activity. We do expect to see a secession of the activity," says Tomlinson.

7 have been arrested and more have been named as suspects in connection with home burglary rings. Posts about the increase in home break-ins have been all over the group's page. Suspicious activity and "be on the lookouts" or "BOLO's" are posted daily.

The mayor encourages you to not only be a neighborhood watcher on the web, but in your community as well by joining or organizing a neighborhood watch group.

"Neighborhood associations help connect neighbors, so you know if they're out of town, you know if they're having their house painted or not," says Tomlinson.

She says she's been working with the Columbus Police Department, and it's been an "every-day, all-day process." She says Columbus residents deserve to feel safe in their homes.

"It's about security and quality of life. You can have wonderful parks, and bike trails and all these great things, but if people don't feel safe in their own home then you really don't have a superior quality of life," says Tomlinson.

The mayor says investigations are still ongoing, and there may be another arrest or two in connection with the home burglaries.

If you'd like to find information or start a neighborhood watch group in your community, you can visit the neighborhood watch section of the Columbus Police Department's web site.
