Benedictine, St. Vincent's Athletes Sign College Letters

Benedictine has a trio of lacrosse players heading to continue their sport on the collegiate level.  Liam Cunningham (Young Harris College, Division II), Dustin White (Mercer University, Division I) and Logan Wilkinson (Shorter University, Division II) each signed on the dotted line on the BC Campus in Savannah.

St. Vincent's has an athlete heading to Mars Hill University, a Division II school in North Carolina.  Maggie Norton starred for the Saints' swim team.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Benedictine Military School Cadets Liam Cunningham, Dustin White and Logan Wilkinson on Tuesday afternoon will sign national letters of intent to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. A signing ceremony will be conducted at 2:25 p.m. in The Well portion of BC's Academic Building. The trio helped BC win state championships in 2012 and 2013.

"We're very excited for all three young men," BC Athletics Director Danny Britt said. "It's a great moment for BC and certainly for those young men, and for the community. (Coach) Dick (McAllaster) has done a great job with lacrosse in the area and these guys have worked very hard. We look forward to them playing this year and in the future at the next level."

Cunningham will be the first Cadet to sign a letter Tuesday, officially becoming the first lacrosse player in Savannah's history to sign with a college. Cunningham will sign with Young Harris College, an NCAA Division II school located in Young Harris, Ga. Cunningham, who holds a 3.49 cumulative grade-point average, is a member of the National Honor Society and an honor roll student. He also is an Eagle Scout. Last season, Cunningham was selected as BC's Most Valuable Player (Offense). He tied for second in the nation in goals scored (74) among juniors, according to MaxPreps. Cunningham was a South Carolina Independent Lacrosse League All-State First-Team selection in 2012 and 2013.

White will be the second Cadet to sign a letter Tuesday, officially becoming the first lacrosse player in Savannah's history to sign with an NCAA Division I program. White will sign with Mercer University, located in Macon, Ga. He was a South Carolina Independent Lacrosse League All-State First-Team selection in 2012 and 2013. White ranked in the top 10 in the nation for ground balls as a sophomore and junior, according to MaxPreps. He recently was featured on the cover of Pooler Magazine and is ranked 12th in Georgia in the 2014 Player Rankings Southeast Region by Studentsports.com.

Wilkinson will be the third Cadet to sign a letter Tuesday. Wilkinson will sign with Shorter University, an NCAA Division II school located in Rome, Ga. He is the only four-year letterman in the history of BC's lacrosse program. Wilkinson, who holds a 3.6 GPA, is an honor roll student. Shorter University head coach Jason Childs said, "Logan was our most significant middie commit in our 2014 class."

 

RELEASE FROM ST. VINCENT'S ACADEMY:

Saint Vincent's Academy (SVA) senior and GCAT swimmer Maggie Norton is scheduled to sign her National Letter of Intent Tuesday, Nov. 19, with Mars Hill University Women's Swimming, a NCAA Division II swim team located in Mars Hill, NC. Norton's family, coaches, GCAT teammates, and friends will join her for the signing ceremony that will take place 3:00 p.m. at St. Vincent's Academy.

Norton is a high school senior who lives in Richmond Hill and will graduate in spring 2014 from St. Vincent's Academy. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained yearly honor roll throughout her high school career.   Norton has been very involved at SVA in clubs and extra-curricular activities, including chorus, student council, Saints for Service, leadership club and track. Norton is the captain of the 2013-2014 SVA swim team and MVP as a sophomore and junior.

Norton says she is extremely excited about swimming for the MHU Lions swim team and taking her swimming career to the next level.  She plans to major in Biology with an emphasis on Pre-Med.

Norton began swimming with GCAT and became a member of USA Swimming in 2002 at the age of 6. She was the 2011 Southeast Divisional Champion and has competed in many meets at the local and state level. Her top events are the 200 Yard Freestyle, 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Individual Medley and  400 Yard Individual Medley. She also led the SVA team to the 2011-12 and 2012-13 GHSA State Championships, qualifying in six events.
