WILMINGTON, N.C. -

A New Hanover County Sheriff's Deputy resigned after he was charged with DWI early Saturday morning. 

WECT in Wilmington reports Deputy Craig Blackmon was stopped by another deputy from New Hanover County, who is a member of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Alcohol Field Enforcement (SAFE) Unit.

It happened while the SAFE unit was on routine patrol this morning. Blackmon was charged with DWI.

He resigned from the Sheriff's Office before the internal investigation began.

Blackmon was a member of the Detective Division. He had been with the department since January 2004.
