The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says a carjacking at a Savannah church Wednesday night and a manhunt in Rincon this afternoon are connected and now their "most wanted" suspect is in custody.

ECSO spokesman David Ehsanipoor tells News 3 that Ashton Wallace, 21, was taken into custody during the manhunt Thursday afternoon in the area of McCall and Bluejay Roads.

Wallace was wanted on multiple charges in connection with the robbery of the Dollar General on Highway 30 on October 28th.

Ehsanipoor says that Wallace and a 17-year-old were driving a stolen Mercedes on McCall Road when they saw a trooper conducting a traffic stop.

The pair got spooked and ran into the woods.

A witness told the trooper who setup a perimeter.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol and Garden City K9 unit searched the area and eventually captured both suspects.

Ehsanipoor says the Mercedes was stolen during a carjacking last night at Jonesville Baptist Church on Montgomery Street in Savannah.

Metro Police tell us the victim had just locked up the church for the night and was getting into their car when a man pointed a gun at them and demanded the keys.

The suspect then took off in the black, 1995 Mercedes.

The victim was not hurt.

Ehsanipoor says they are still investigating whether Wallace may have been the man involved in the carjacking.

He is being held at the Effingham County Jail on charges including Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, Theft by Taking and other crimes related to the Dollar General robbery.

Wallace and the juvenile are also charged with Theft by Receiving Stolen Vehicle and Obstruction.

More charges may follow.
