5k/10k Run Honors Fallen Soldier

Posted: Updated:

It's your chance to get some exercise and help out a good cause while honoring a soldier who lost his life fighting for our country.

Marine Captain Matthew Freeman was killed in a firefight four years ago in Afghanistan.

Ever since then, his family and the community have worked to keep his name and his dream alive.

That continues this weekend with the Captain Matthew Freeman Memorial Run.

Proceeds benefit a scholarship fund for military siblings, which honors both Matt's sacrifice and his family.

"My daughters both stopped their careers at that point," explains Lisa Freeman, Matthew Freeman's mother. "One to come home and take care of us and one had to go back to Washington state to be with her husband heading out on his 7th deployment. This is an opportunity for me to say I know Matthew would be happy his sisters are being honored this way."

The 5k and 10k both start at 8:30 Saturday morning in Richmond Hill at the Waterways Township on Highway 144.
