RALEIGH, N.C. -

The Most Reverend Michael  Burbidge, bishop of Raleigh, will celebrate a special mass for the people of the Philippines Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Raleigh.

The mass comes after Typhoon Haiyan devastated a large portion of the country. The mass will be

at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Saint Raphael the Archangel Church.  Father Ryan Carnecer, parochial vicar at Saint Eugene Church in Wendell, will be the homilist. Carnecer is a native of the Philippines.

Burbidge has asked pastors in the Diocese of Raleigh's 96 parishes and mission churches to schedule a special collection in the coming weeks for the survivors of the deadly typhoon.  Donations from the collection will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services, which is on the scene.

"I express my deep sadness in learning of the death and damage in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan, and I join with all of the faithful in the Diocese of Raleigh, especially our Filipino community, in praying for the deceased, their families, and all those impacted," Burbidge said.
