Warrants: Teacher assistant punched, choked & kicked student

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - New and disturbing details came to light Friday in the case of a special needs teacher assistant assault case.

Arrest warrants accuse Cherry Taylor of punching a student in the stomach, then taking his own fists and making him punch himself in the face repeatedly, causing his nose to bleed.

Later the same day, the warrants say she choked the student with her hands. A week later, the warrants say she kicked the handicapped boy in the side.

All 4 assaults took place at Elmhurst Elementary School, where Taylor worked.

She's suspended with pay while the investigation continues.

A suspended special education teacher assistant was arrested Thursday for assaulting a student.

Cherry Taylor worked in the exceptional children's classroom at Elmhurst Elementary School in Greenville. The alleged assault happened last week. School administrators were made aware of the incident on Tuesday November 5th. Taylor was suspended with pay the next day. She bonded out of the Pitt County Detention Center under a $15,000 bond.

Elmhurst principal Colleen Burt notified parents Thursday.

Pitt County Schools released the following statement:

“In accordance with federal law, the school system is limited in what it can say about specific personnel matters, especially those that are related to a criminal investigation. However, any charge of assault is an unacceptable matter that the staff and Board of Education take very seriously. In this matter, the district acted promptly. We have worked closely with law enforcement, and there are currently no student safety concerns at Elmhurst Elementary."

Taylor was also suspended for disciplinary reasons in December of 2011, while working at J.H. Rose, and re-instated a month later. She has been with the district since January 2007.
