Pregnant military fiancee has car and U-Haul stolen during stop in Lumberton

Posted: Updated:
LUMBERTON, NC -

A pregnant woman from Florida, moving to Virginia to be closer to her fiancé, had all of her belongings stolen when her SUV and U-Haul trailer were taken in Lumberton.

Kim Ober, who is 8 months pregnant, couldn't wait to make her move from her home in Florida to be with her fiancé stationed in Hampton Roads at Little Creek.

"I was down there for work so we had been long distance for a little while and found out we were pregnant about 10 days before he left for deployment," said Ober, whose fiance is still deployed.

Ober packed up everything she owned into a U-haul and left Saturday morning with a friend -- driving from Lakeland to Virginia Beach. After hours behind the wheel they pulled off at hotel in Lumberton.

"All I went into the hotel with was really my purse and my toothbrush because we were going to get right back on the road ...  brushed my teeth we were back down stairs at 6:3,0 walked down the stairs the entire U-haul, the trailer and my Jeep were gone and there was glass all over the ground," she said.

A short time later-- police found the U-haul, but the news is not good.

"They found the trailer and my Jeep and one county and the U-haul in the next county over and both had been torched," Ober said.

The evidence was set on fire and what the thieves didn't take was destroyed.

Her fiancée Greg who is still on deployment and should be back at the end of the month – just before their baby is born.

She's now having to start over.

The two men who police believe are responsible had no idea who they were taking from.

"I started thinking as sad and as heartbreaking at this is for me and my baby, their lives must be a lot sadder than mine right now, if that's the type of life that they are living," she said.

There is some good news: Ober's friends have created the Kim Recovery Fund online to help the future mom get back on her feet. So far, nearly $5,000 has been collected.
