Community steps in to help those affected by Durham Five Points fire

DURHAM, N.C. -

It has been a week since a fire damaged apartments and businesses in downtown Durham.

Last Monday, the fire occurred at a building in the area known as Five Points, at the intersection of Main and Morris streets.

A pizza restaurant, cupcake shop and bicycle store all remain temporarily closed.

The fire also damaged three apartments. The couple in one of them said they are grateful for the community, which has helped them with everything from cups of coffee to places to stay.

"In that moment when everything is so chaotic, the simplest things can become difficult," said Todd Moser, whose apartment was damaged. "The simplest things can become difficult and having people reach out and make those things as easy as possible was a huge deal for us."

Moser said it could be a few weeks before moving back.

Investigators say the fire was accidental and started in the exhaust duct from the oven at the Pizzeria Toro.
