Man in Critical Condition After Shooting Himself in Standoff

A Savannah man is in the hospital after an hours long standoff in Savannah last night. Savannah Chatham Metro Police say the man shot himself while that standoff was in progress. 58 year old Steven Spann is listed in critical but stable condition after he was taken to Memorial University Medical Center.  The Metro Police SWAT team surrounded his house on East Gwinnett Street after they were called around 9pm Saturday night by a relative who also lives at the residence. When police arrived the relative told them Spann was in another part of the house with a rifle. Police say they had just managed to talk Spann into the leaving the house, but they say just before he emerged he shot himself. Police are still investigating the incident.
