DURHAM, N.C. -

Some of the biggest names in the comic book industry are in Durham all weekend for the 4th annual North Carolina Comicon.

The convention started with humble beginnings but is now selling out hotels, and that's good news for Durham's economy.

N.C. Comicon has never been more popular. Alan Gill is the founder and said they doubled their numbers this year. From 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday, the halls of the Durham Convention Center were packed.

This year, organizers said they've sold out hotels in Durham and have seen a larger demand from vendors and attendees than in years past.

Crystal Martin from Durham is a regular. Tonight she dressed up as Rogue from X-Men and said, "It definitely is a lot more people and a lot more costumes than in previous years."

Last year, Gill said about 4,500 came to the convention.

The big crowds were drawn in partially because of big industry stars such as the conceptual artist of the Matrix, to one of Marvel's writers and artists.

Geof Darrow is a Comic Book Artist and has worked on all three Matrix films. He said, "The economy here seems to be booming."

Frank Cho, who is a writer and artist at Marvel Comics, said, "It's busier than last year. I was here last year also."

Gill said because of the demand, he's already booked his venue for next year.
