Free hunting for kids with serious illnesses and disabilities

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - A local hunting club combines its passion with giving back.

On Saturday, the Clay Hill Hunting Club in Pitt County hosted a free hunting weekend for children suffering from various illnesses and disabilities.

The club hosted eight local children over the last two weekends. Each child was paired with a club member during the hunt for the two day event.  The kids and their families were also treated to lunch between morning and afternoon hunting sessions.

For many of the children it was their first time hunting.

"It was amazing, I was so excited I couldn't wait to come here," said 12-year-old John Dean.

"Finally!  I got a deer," said 12-year-old Brantley Anton.

Although this was the first hunting trip for Anton and Dean, they have been friends for years. The two have spent the last five years battling cancer together.

“[It’s] a blessing that I get this kind of weekend out in the woods. It's a relief that people know what I've been through, and some of them have been through it. It's just a weight off my chest," said 10-year-old cancer survivor Hunter Presgrave.

Clay Hill Hunting Club members say this is opportunity for the kids to just have fun.

“[It’s] been one of the experiences for these kids they'll never forget. All the Clay Hill club members, Steve, and myself, we're never forget it and it will be with us forever," said club member Lawrence Vandiford.

Event Organizer, Steve Tugwell says all the children will go home with deer meat and free mount from the hunt.
