COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Sue Funk, a teacher at Midland Middle School, has been awarded Middle School Civic Educator of the Year by the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement. The award was presented to Sue by Governor Nathan Deal at the State Capitol.

Each year, the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement selects and showcases three teachers who have done exemplary work in preparing young people to become informed and engaged citizens.

The educators demonstrate a special expertise in teaching about citizenship, the U.S. Constitution, Georgia Studies, Congress, and/or public policy at the state and local level. They use experiential learning techniques to engage their students in Social Studies, teach civic education for democratic participation in society and actively encourage students to find and use their voice to effect change in their school and community.
