COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Better Business Bureau is warning folks of a telemarketing scheme targeting the elderly. The organization has received reports of robocalls imitating Life Alert, an emergency response company.

The calls ask for your personal and billing information. They claim to be free, but they end up charging you a monthly fee. The BBB says if a stranger calls and offers you something for free in exchange for your personal information, hang up the phone.

"If you need the service you can go to a local alarm company and they provide the service as well. You can reach out and touch these people, you know they're legitimate, you know if they take your personal financial info, that they're going to with it what they're supposed to do," says Leonard Crain of the Better Business Bureau in Columbus.

Life Alert has sued several companies for using their name during this scheme.
