Weak Turnout At The Polls For SPLOST Election

SAVANNAH, GA -

A steady flow of voters are turning out to the 89 polling stations in Chatham County. Election Officials are reporting a weak turnout but somewhat better than expected.   Of course even a light turnout is no indication of which way votes are going.

News 3 talked to Chatham County Board of Elections Chairman Joe Steffen at about 2:00 pm.

"We were looking at somewhere between 15% and 20%.  Maybe closer to 15%.  It looks to me now like it may be a lot closer to 20% and maybe a little over 20%."

But those numbers pale in comparison to the numbers in a presidential election year.

"That's up to 55%, maybe 60%.  Sometimes even higher than that."

Steffen says the voting process has been going smoothly for the most part.

"We've had a few machines with some battery problems.  Basically not being fully charged.  But that's pretty normal."

Polls are open until 7:00 pm. Follow WSAV.com for LIVE election results.
