CHATHAM COUNTY, GA -

Chatham County Authorities say up to six people are implicated in a complicated scheme that involves stolen credit card numbers and up to $18,000 taken from victims. They say it started with an inmate (transferred to Chatham County temporarily from Hays Prison.) That inmate, Kerry Akeem Milledge his girlfriend Britney Daughtry allegedly used a system designed to help inmates obtain small amounts of money while in custody to buy items like toothpaste, etc. while behind bars.

But the two reportedly gamed the system which allegedly allowed Daughtry to withdraw cash and lots of it.

"Talking with investigations with the Department of Corrections, they haven't seen anything quite like this," said Corporal Allen O'Berry from the Sheriff's office.

The scheme reportedly operated like this:  a website called jailatm.com is a legitimate service that allows friends and family members to deposit what is normally a small amount of cash in an account for that prisoner to use while in jail.  Officials say they normally buy small items like toothpaste, etc.

But in this case, authorities allege that hundreds and even several thousand dollars were deposited into accounts for Milledge and four other inmates he recruited. They say the woman then began withdrawing the money.

"She was showing up numerous times a week for different inmates receiving debit card after debit," said O'Berry.

O'Berry said a staff member noticed that Daughtry was withdrawing a lot of money from five accounts which is unusual and an investigation began. (O'Berry says civilians can indeed withdraw money from the jail accounts with the inmate's permission.  The civilian is given a debit card which allows them to retrieve the cash.)

As the investigation ensued, a search warrant was served at Daughtry's house where authorities allege they found about $1,400 in cash along with cell phones, a new computer and debit and creit cards>

Daughtry and her boyfriend's father have already been charged for taking money.  And the inmates participating are in trouble too.   "We are planning on indicting those (four ) inmates as well as Milledge up at Hays State Prison for conspiracy to commit identity fraud," said O'Berry

Authorities also say another inmate at Hays State Prison serving a life sentence for murder was implicated as the one who obtained the credit card numbers and even used a cell phone to set up the accounts.
