Pooler Dog Sniffs Out Termites And Bedbugs

Posted: Updated:
POOLER, GA -

Common household pests like termites and bed bugs have a new hunter to fear and it's one on four legs. A new business in Pooler is using a dog's powerful sense of smell to sniff out trouble.

One of the owners of Super Sniffers, William Hudson, actually had an infestation of termites himself and thought of this idea to help pinpoint the problem.

Now a rescue dog named Lily is using her sniffer to track down what could be lurking behind the walls.

Pooler homeowner, Betty Fretwell, hired the lab Sunday to see if she had any termites in her house that she is trying to sell.

"We felt like the dog could give us a better turnout with his senses because you can't see the termite, you have to find out, and I think the dog could find out," said Fretwell.

After multiple trips outside and in, Lily's sniffer didn't go off, which was a relief to Fretwell.

"He didn't stop and I was happy because I was waiting to see if they would stop because they explained to us it would, if they found something," said Fretwell.

William Hudson trains Lily daily to make sure her nose is still 98 to 100 percent accurate when it comes to finding termites and bed bugs.

"They give off a methane gas, and that's what they hunt, and that's how we know. They only alert to alive termites because dead termites don't give off methane gas," said Hudson.

When Lily does find her target she alerts Hudson.

"She always sits right next to it, so that's where we know where it's at," said Hudson.

Hudson said while his business doesn't exterminate half the battle is over by locating the pests.

"It can take them hours to locate a bed bug infestation, sometimes never. This dog, within a matter of minutes, locates the bed bug infestation," said Hudson.
