Food Banks Nationwide Prepare for Surge in Demand

A report in USA today underscores a fact most of us are familiar with. The holidays are the time when they receive most of their donations. But the opposite is also true: the holidays are the time when their services are most in demand.

Food banks everywhere are bracing for the rush which they are expecting in November and December. It's not only the holiday season, but it just happens to be the time immediately after the U.S. Government has scaled back benefits for those on the food stamps or SNAP program. SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program.  On Friday the government took five billion dollars out of that program. For families on SNAP, that could mean a reduction each month of anywhere from eleven dollars to 60 dollars.

Currently one in 7 Americans is reliant on the SNAP benefits.  But the trouble for those reliant on the program may only be beginning. Congress is currently considering a bill that would take 40 billion more dollars from the program. A number of advocates questioned say such a cut would be ‘ devastating' .
