Remember When Encore: Columbus Square Mall

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Columbus Square Mall opened in 1965 and was one of the first indoor malls in the State of Georgia.  Located on Macon Road, it had 38 stores including Penney's and Sears.

Twenty years after it opened Columbus Square Mall was expanded and refurbished.  They celebrated with a grand re-opening in 1985.

Local resident Angie Thiel recalls many a childhood visit to the mall.  "This time of year brings back memories because of all the wonderful decorations they had, the Santa Claus display down by Kirven's, and the live reindeer."

The mall was noted for its creative promotions.  Marketing Director June Bedle arranged for the famous General Lee car from "The Dukes of Hazzard" to be on display.

Jay O'Connell operated O'Connell's Coin and Jewelry just inside the main Columbus Square Mall entrance.  He remembers, "They had a promotion where they brought in maybe a 400 pound bear and they'd let you wrestle the bear (after signing off on the paperwork).

By the late 90's Columbus Square Mall had closed except for Sears which eventually located at Columbus Park Crossing.  The city bought the property.  It's now home to the main Columbus Public Library.

The old Muscogee County Courthouse stood in the shadows of our current government center in downtown Columbus. It was built in 1896. It holds special memories for Columbus resident Jeanne McCrum.
