The Shorter Mansion is arguably one of the most famous structures in the state of Alabama. If you saw the movie, "Sweet Home Alabama," starring Reese Witherspoon, you caught a glimpse of it.
The home was built in 1884 by Eli Sims Shorter, a rich cotton broker, for his bride Wileyna Lamar, heiress to the SSS Tonic empire.
Tourists from around the world have visited the mansion, which features hand cut hard wood floors, several different types of crown molding, and beveled glass. The upstairs of the home is a museum.
"We had a German couple here two weeks ago and I asked how in the world did you hear about Eufaula This couple in their tour guide, Eufaula is listed and the Shorter Mansion is listed, in fact, I made a copy of their tour guide, I couldn't read it, but they assured me that it was Eufaula," said Pam Snead, Executive Director of the Eufaula Heritage Association.
You can tour the home Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The annual Pilgrimage of homes is April 4, 5, and 6, 2014.
