NC State Fair Operator Charged with Assault After Ride Crashes

North Carolina Police believe a mishap that hurt several people at the state fair was no accident. They have arrested the operator of a ride that crashed and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon.

Witnesses said on Thursday night people were getting  off the Vortex ride, when suddenly it restarted. Those present said it made a terrible noise, as if it was the grinding of metal parts on metal parts. When it was over, five people were injured.

The ride operator, 46-year old Timothy Tutterow is in custody and charged  with  three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon...

The County Sheriff says the charges fit the crime.

"This ride was tampered with after the inspection and critical safety devices were tampered with and compromised."

The sheriff's office says Tutterow is an independent ride contractor for a company that only had one ride at the fair - the vortex...

More arrests in the incident are possible and the investigation is ongoing.
