Battle of the Badges raises money for deputy in critical condition

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Johnson City police, firefighters, and EMS teams gathered today to play some football for a cause.

After a car accident left Washington County Sgt. David Chambers in critical condition, the emergency response teams in the area decided to raise money to offset his medical expenses.

Saturday, local response teams gathered all day to play flag football for Chambers.

Steve Hartley, who was the first EMS responder to Chambers after the accident, put together the event.

"I hope it means a lot to him. We all volunteered our time, volunteered our money to come out here and raise it for David to help pay his medical bills. I hear he still has quite a bit a ways to go," Hartley said.

Hartley said he hopes the first responder teams are able to do a fundraiser like this every year for those in the community in need of support.
