Frantic calls from State Fair: '5 people fell straight from the sky'

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Dramatic 911 calls released by Wake County authorities Friday afternoon reveal the severity of the incident at the North Carolina State Fair Thursday night.

Five people were injured, two of them seriously, after an incident on the Vortex ride behind the Expo Center.

"The ride started and it wasn't supposed to," one caller said. "People were still on the ride and it went up in the air and people have fallen down on the platform.

"These people are not moving," the caller said.

Another frantic caller said, "We're at the State Fair, and five people fell straight from the sky - 20 feet drop. The ride fell - the Vortex at the back of the Fair, close to the back gate. About five people injured - and one bleeding from the head. Don't move them! Don't move them!"

Another person identified that they were at the Fair and said, "You've got to get someone out here quick. The ride started and it wasn't supposed to and people fell off – at the Vortex."

The caller said some people were on the platform and "not moving."

Another caller made a similar comment.

"We're at the State Fair and a ride turned upside down and dumped everybody out," the caller said. "They're people bleeding really bad and there is one guy who is not moving at all."

Two patients have been released from WakeMed, and three remain hospitalized. Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the families have asked that the names not be released.
