Athletes of the Week: Auburn High Tigers

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn High Tigers overcame a sluggish start last week against R.E. Lee to post a 35-14 win, and with that, earn our WRBL Athletes of the Week honors.

Auburn's win sets them up for a top-five showdown with arch-rival Opelika on Friday.

"The atmosphere, I must say, is crazy," said senior linebacker Deion Heard. "You feel the emotion around it. It's so energetic, emotional."

The two teams split the series last year, but Opelika won the important one, in the playoffs. The Tigers have revenge on their mind.

"We know that if we play Auburn High football, physical and hard-nosed, that we'll be able to do well," said senior left tackle John David Hart. "It'll be a great game. They'll put a real good fight, and we will too."

With Auburn ranked no. 4 in the latest ASWA poll and Opelika at no. 5, Tiger head coach Tim Carter knows the margin for error is razor thin.

"Couple of plays can determine the course and the momentum of the ballgame," Carter said. "You want to come out, get off to a good start and get the lead and hopefully get some of that momentum on your side, because it will be a huge crowd, both communities there in full force."

The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT kickoff at Bulldog Stadium in Opelika. It's the site of our WRBL Friday Night Tailgate.
