40 Arrested In 3-Month Child Pornography Investigation

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -

A three-month investigation into child pornography resulted in 42 warrants, and 40 arrests Thursday.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the warrants were issued as part of Operation Red Box, targeting those accused of downloading and viewing child porn. Four of the suspects allegedly traveled to meet for sex with children.

Sheriff Zach Scott applauded the work of the Franklin County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which includes 18 men and women from around the county.

"The Internet has become a virtual play place for kids, and with that, easy access to our children," Scott said.

NBC4 was on hand for some of the arrests that were made in the last three months, when computers, hard drives, and laptops were seized, revealing images and video of child pornography.

"It is critical. We all consider it to be one of our most important things in fighting crime that would hurt our children," Scott said.

Among the suspects arrested are sex offenders, elections employees, and a minister.

Eight juvenile victims were identified during the investigation.

Now that the majority of the blitz is complete, NBC4 is working on an in-depth report on Operation Red Box, focusing on the actual conversations that took place between suspects and task force members online.

The report, set to air on Oct. 31, will include the arrests, computers, and more inside the operation.

The old Savannah Pharmacy opened its doors in 1914 but has since been deemed structurally unsound and is in the process of being demolished. The local business stood at the heart of Savannah's African-American community. In 1964, it served black clientele when other businesses would not. It closed its doors on February 28th 2007. The city of Savannah says the demolition is expected to be complete by October 6th.
