RALEIGH, N.C. -

A contractor working at North Carolina State University was arrested Thursday on charges related to the theft of copper wire.

Raymond Michael Baker, 41, of Roanoke Rapids, was arrested by detectives with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office on seven counts of larceny by an employee and seven counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

N.C. State Police had been investigating the theft of copper wire from construction sites on Centennial Campus since early September. Campus police notified the Halifax County Sheriff's Office about the charges Thursday morning.

The suspect told police that he made about $50,000 from the sale of the copper wire.

Baker worked on Centennial Campus as an employee of M.C. Dean. N.C. State Police say he is not affiliated directly with the university.

Baker, who is also a registered sex offender, is being held in the Halifax County Detention Center under a $20,000 bond.
