Durham Days Inn damaged by fire

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham emergency services responded to a fire at the Days Inn Hotel at 3460 Hillsborough Rd. late Wednesday night.

The Durham Fire Department said more than 15 units responded to the call at 10:04 p.m. When they arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke, but the flames were contained to a hallway outside of the rooms.

The fire was in the breezeway of the first floor and extended to the second floor in the back of the hotel, authorities said. Some of the roof also received damage.

The fire department said the fire was under control within 37 minutes.

Cleaning crews at the hotel had been changing out mattresses during the day and some were left in the hallway. Authorities believe that the mattresses were the cause of the heavy smoke, but don't believe the fire started with the mattresses.

Hotel guests were moved to a different location and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire and where the fire started are still under investigation.
