EUFAULA, Ala. -

At least 500 people marched through the streets of Eufaula Monday calling for justice after 26-year-old Cameron Massey died in a police-involved shooting last week.

Eufaula schools closed down for the demonstration, showing the strength in numbers behind the Massey family's cause. They say it's all about stopping the violence, and getting justice.

Reverend Kenneth Glasgow remarks, "Three things the mother said. One: it's not to be racial. Two: it's not to be any more violence because she had enough with losing her son. Three is she wants justice. And that's justice for all."

Rev. Glasgow led the march alongside Massey's mother Jackie. She says she's overwhelmingly happy that the demonstration remained peaceful.

"All I want is justice," she says. "We can come hand-in-hand together and accomplish the same thing without violence. I don't want anybody else to go through the same thing I'm going through."

The crowd walked three miles through Eufaula's neighborhoods wearing X's on their shirts. Organizer Shanita Porter, a close friend of Massey, says many people wanted the march to end at the courthouse, but she decided to hit the community where it counts.

"The 'X' is stop the violence,," says Porter, "not just violence against the police, violence against us. It's violence everywhere, period. We had three murders in one week, and that's unheard of here in our city, being that we're a city that sticks together. Maybe if we had started this a week earlier, the incident that we're here about probably wouldn't have happened, who knows? But we're taking a stand right now."

Rev. Glasgow called the group today's version of the civil rights organization SNCC, which was fueled by the passions of young activists. He says, "I've never seen this many young folks come together and be as calm as they was."

The march comes a day after local and state leaders met with the community to urge calm while the Alabama Bureau of Investigation continues its investigation. The Barbour County district attorney assured those in attendance a just investigation would take place.

"If any police officer is found to have committed a crime, I promise you that police officer will be prosecuted," Ben Reeves said.

Cameron Massey had had run-ins with the law before he was shot by a police officer last Tuesday in the parking lot of the One Stop 431 Wrecker Service. The ABI is now investigating the case.

On Friday, Eufaula Mayor Jack Tibbs issued a statement asking for patience from the community.
