FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A soldier who survived a quadruple amputation received a special honor in Fayetteville Thursday night. A documentary film highlighting Staff Sgt. Travis Mills premiered at the Carmike Cinemas in Fayetteville's Westwood Shopping Center.

Mills lost parts of his arms and legs while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in April 2012. He was in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded and sent pieces of plastic and glass tearing through his arms and legs.

"I don't want anybody walking away [from the film] saying, 'Is that going to be my husband next or my sister next?'" Mills said. "I think you're more likely to get hit by lightning that to have this happen to you."

He also hopes it does not make his recovery look picture-perfect. He said it has been tough, not just for himself but for his marriage.

"I just want people to know when times get tough, dig deep and understand that it will get better. You just have to put the time and effort in."

That encouragement is what his story really is all about.

"It's just a story about me having this explosion and accident and just getting better, and to motivate and uplift and really go out there and get after it," he said.

Mills, his wife and 2-year old daughter will take another big step in that direction when he is released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center this November. Since the explosion, Mills has spent most of his time in the hospital. He returned to the Fort Bragg area for the documentary premier Thursday.

"I still want to be an 82nd guy, but they do great things up there," Mills said. "They have me walking and talking and I drove here yesterday - six and a half hours."

Mills said he and his wife are planning to live in Maine when he leaves Walter Reed. His wife has family in the state.

The non-profit organization Fotolanthropy created the documentary titled "Travis – A Soldier's Story." More information can be found on the movie's website:  http://travisthemovie.com/
