Columbus career expo helps veterans find jobs

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Hundreds of veterans nationwide struggle to find jobs. The Georgia Department of Labor held a job fair Thursday to help. Paychecks for Patriots was the Department of Labor's first job fair specifically for veterans.

Richard Blanks is a disabled veteran who served in the Air Force for 5 years. He says the job fair gave him an idea of which companies are hiring veterans.

"Veterans have good job experiences and we need to match our job experiences with the requirements, so this at least gives us a little indication of what employers are looking for," says Blanks.

Autozone was one of 46 employers at the career fair. Their store manager looks for one specific trait when hiring.

"Customer service is what we're looking for," says Joy Davlia, a store manager at Autozone. "When customers come into the store, we want someone who will take care of them."

Blanks says customer service is something a lot of veterans have because of their military background.

Most companies nowadays look for someone who can speak, meet and greet, and I think we have a bonus by being able to do that," says Blanks.

About 250 veterans and 46 employers attended the Columbus Paychecks for Patriots career expo, according to Regional Department of Labor Director Lynne Jones.

The Department of Labor says if you're a veteran looking for work and missed the job fair Thursday, you can visit the Columbus Career Center, where there are veteran representatives to help with job placement.
