RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina State Fair begins an 11-day run in Raleigh Thursday afternoon.

State Agriculture Secretary Steve Troxler said the fair opening shows the importance of agriculture in the state.

But this year's event also includes deep-fried Sugar Daddy candy bars, a Sloppy Joe sandwich on a Krispy Kreme doughnut and a pork barbeque-stuffed egg roll.

This year's fair does not have a petting zoo. Fair spokesman Brian Long says the concern over the spread of illness made it impossible for the petting zoo operator to get liability insurance.

But there will be plenty of animals to see at the fair.

One new ride this year will be the Rampage. It's a double Ferris wheel that allows both wheels to spin independently, one on top of the other.

The fair isn't all fun, games and fried food, though. Safety is always a concern for law enforcement.

At the N.C. State Fair safety conference Thursday morning, officials said the fairgrounds would have 150 surveillance cameras, and undercover officers would mingle amongst the crowds as well.

Officials also said that the N.C. Department of Labor has tested the rides and deemed them safe. And the Wake County sheriff assured the games have been tested and are winnable.

Last year, nearly one million people attended the fair.
